N.J. Thornton Dry Stone Walling

Farm Wall, Beamsly

North Yorkshire

This expansive dry stone wall project at a working farm in Beamsley showcases the enduring practicality and beauty of traditional Yorkshire craftsmanship. Using locally sourced stone with the characteristic rugged texture of the Dales, we reconstructed substantial sections of this historic boundary to ensure it continues to serve its essential agricultural function for generations to come.

Special attention was paid to maintaining consistent height and batter (inward lean) throughout the lengthy boundary, creating a visually pleasing line that follows the undulating terrain while providing effective livestock containment. The distinctive top coping stones were positioned using traditional techniques that ensure maximum stability against wind and weather.

This extensive farm boundary demonstrates our commitment to preserving the traditional skills that have shaped Yorkshire’s rural landscape for centuries—creating structures that honor the region’s farming heritage while meeting contemporary agricultural needs.
