N.J. Thornton Dry Stone Walling

Farmhouse Garden Wall, Oxenhope

West Yorkshire

This traditional dry stone wall project enhances a historic farmhouse garden in the rugged moorland village of Oxenhope. Using locally quarried Yorkshire stone, we created a distinctive boundary that honors the region’s rich agricultural heritage while defining the garden space of this characterful property.

The wall incorporates the hallmark features of authentic West Yorkshire dry stone construction—carefully selected through stones, traditional capping, and subtle batter that ensures structural integrity without mortar. Each stone was hand-placed to achieve the tight-fitting construction that makes these walls capable of withstanding the harsh Pennine weather for generations.

Following the natural contours of the Oxenhope landscape, the wall creates sheltered areas within the garden while framing views of the surrounding moorland. The weathered textures and varied hues of the stone create a natural harmony with both the farmhouse architecture and the wild beauty of this Brontë Country setting.

The completed wall stands as a testament to the enduring craftsmanship that defines the West Yorkshire landscape, connecting this Oxenhope property to centuries of local building tradition while enhancing its distinctive character.
