N.J. Thornton Dry Stone Walling

Limestone Boundary Wall, Settle

North Yorkshire

This distinctive boundary wall in the historic market town of Settle showcases the exceptional beauty of local Yorkshire limestone. Using traditional dry stone techniques perfected over centuries in the Dales, we created a boundary structure that seamlessly integrates with the unique character of this North Yorkshire community.

The wall features the characteristic pale gray limestone with its subtle cream and white tones that define Settle’s architectural landscape. Each stone was hand-selected for both structural properties and aesthetic appeal, with careful attention to the natural bedding planes that ensure proper water shedding and maximum stability.

Following traditional construction methods, the wall incorporates properly sized through stones at regular intervals, creating essential structural ties between the inner and outer faces. The distinctive top coping stones were carefully selected and positioned to protect the wall from water penetration while creating the clean, defined line that characterizes quality Yorkshire stonework.

The project required careful consideration of the site’s topography, with the wall following the natural contours of the land to create a boundary that appears to have emerged organically from the landscape. Special care was taken around existing mature trees and landscape features, preserving the established character of the property while enhancing it with this new limestone boundary.

This Settle project demonstrates our commitment to honoring the distinctive limestone traditions of North Yorkshire—creating boundaries that will stand for generations while maintaining the authentic architectural character that makes the Dales such a unique and treasured landscape.
